Presentation Idea/ Mock up

Above, is a simple compositional idea on how I plan to present my work. I am taking forward 9 photographs (there is only 8 drawn but there will be 9 altogether).
Firstly, there will be a book which is open in the middle. Stemming from this will be the photographs, this is to portray that they are coming out from the book. The book itself will contain a few paragraphs of words that I will collect from Oliver (a brief summary of each topic and what he thought about delving into his life).
As this is coming from the book, the photographs need to be held by something strong. eg. Coat hanger wire? This is something I will need to experiment with ready for my exam.
The photographs themselves will be no larger than A4. They are all of different sizes but will be scaled to an A4 size. These will then be mounted onto card and then parchment, or writing paper. I was thinking something with a vintage old style writing feel. This is because it represents the book and also something Oliver would like as he enjoys writing as well as reading. I will leave enough space to write a first hand account quote from Oliver at the top of every photograph of each topic. This then will become very personal to myself and to Oliver as the fact he can contribute further in my work is a bonus.

Development

When out shopping at a garden centre I found these bamboo/wood sticks. I instantly thought of my photography presentation. We brought some and took some home. My dad and I decided to experiment using my idea of presentation to see if I could use the sticks within it. I feel that these represent books the best, instead of using wire, these represent the idea of books and reading as they link together. When experimenting, we found that you can split the top of them to make a slot, this then could hold my photographs (shown below). This seemed to be sturdy as I can cut the shoot as deep as I want depending on the weight of the photograph.
Once we had figured this out, the next obstacle was how it is going to appear coming out from the book. Originally, we thought that it would not be sturdy enough to place in the middle of the book, and that it could easily be unbalanced and fall over.
Then, the idea of placing it behind the book occurred. The book would be open with a monologue from Oliver, there will be a board, placed behind the book covered in brown paper (shown below), I then will stick the shoots (which will hold the photographs) to the board. The spacing between the photographs will contain the different quotes taken from Oliver about each topic.

This idea was an affective way to showcase my work without having too many complications of it going wrong. However, the question of whether it will still contain the same meaning as how I originally saw this turning out. On saying this, I still have time to experiment and think of new ways to present this in a more intimate way.

Mock up

Starting my mock up, I used the paper that I planned to use, I used PVA glue to stick the paper onto the card to mount my photographs on to. I made this so it had a 5cm radius all the way around creating a boarder. Once I had done this, I then attached the bamboo sticks as shown above and below by slitting the top and sliding the card in between. I then placed the completed mounting into the hole already made (only using a tester piece of wood) Once placed and secure in the hole, I left it. I then noticed that the card was wilting inwards. It did not look stable. When I looked at this, I believe it was the PVA glue that was causing the card to become heavier. Also the size of the whole piece looked too large and considering I had the then do another 8 of these, it would not all fit. After this realisation I did not then end up carrying on with this knowing it would end up being too unstable.

After the failing of using PVA glue to stick the paper to the card, I then had to think about what I could do to then improve and make it work.
I ended up using spray mount. I cut out the card, this time using a 2cm radius around the edge for the boarder. As this was an experiment to see if this could hold, I did not use the brown paper yet. I then spray mounted one of my chosen photographs onto the card. Lastly, I attached the bamboo sticks as I did previous and then placing it in the hole. This stood up much better and held up better. Also, I cut the slit in the bamboo slightly deeper to slot into so that I could place the photograph further down giving it more support. After this experiment was successful I then went on with this to develop my mock up.

Above, are two photographs which shows how the bamboo sticks will be supported and how they will sit. On the top of the hole I will cover any gaps using bluetack to secure it in place, making sure it does not move around if moved or touched. Depending how it works out with using 9 photographs, underneath, I will also place bluetack on the bottom if the sticks end up at an abnormal angle for extra support.
On the top, I will have the pieces of paper placed with holes in them for the bamboo which will then cover up the bluetack.
The piece of wood used, will represent the book. I will paint the sides white and then create lines all the way round to look like pages of a book. I will also place a few pages of lined paper over the top.

Knowing that using the spray mount had worked, I then used another one of my chosen photographs to then use the brown paper as the boarder. I still used a 2cm radius for the boarder. This seemed to work well and when placed through the hole, it still stood up and was very stable.

Lastly, I wrote the relevant quote that I have gathered from Oliver. I wrote this at the top of the photograph in the boarder. I then cut a long piece of the same paper and wrote the title of the photograph and spiralled it around the bamboo stick. Once this was done I was not happy with it. I felt the paper used did not compliment the photograph and does not feel relevant as I thought it would be. Also, I felt that the spiralled piece did not look as effective as I'd hoped. I want the quote provided by Oliver to portray the message along with the photograph rather than using the spiralled technique to tell the audience what it is about.

Not being happy with my previous experiment, I then thought of something more relevant and something that would compliment the photographs. I found an old book I wasn't going to read and ripped up pages from this. I stuck this on the card and used this as a background. Instantly I preferred this idea as it becomes more complimentary to my project of 'Reading.' I then wrote the relevant quote at the top. Again, this did not satisfy me as I felt it was too close and compact to the photograph and also on top of the writing, seemed too busy.

I then cut out a piece of the previous brown paper that I used and wrote the quote onto this. I knew I didn't want to place this on the boarder or the photograph, therefore I placed it just below attaching it to the bamboo stick. This looked much better. I needed a difference in colours, making it look more interesting so I felt this worked well placed here. This then, is what I will use in my exam.

My Dad proceeded to drill the holes in the wood in the places I wanted. We then had to experiment with the sizes of the bamboo. The two longest ones are on the outside of the base. We then have four slightly smaller shoots placed in the middle and then another three even smaller that are placed further to the front. During our experimentation, we had to drill two extra holes due to positioning and making them even whilst thinking about overlapping. of the photographs. This will not affect my overall presentation as these will be covered up by the paper I will place over the wood.

I then placed one of my mock photographs in a hole near the back. Without having to mount all my photographs now, I placed black card in two at the front and one in the middle. This gave me an idea of how my final piece will look and I am confident in that there is slight overlap however this looks affective. In the exam I will then secure these shoots in the holes with blue tac. The only problem that occurred was the quote I was going to place below the photograph on the bamboo shoot. I will change this, placing it on the top however still using the brown paper.

Below will be the paragraph that I will be writing on the open page of the book, in which the photographs will be coming out from. This is a first hand account from Oliver himself, in which he explained how he felt about the project and each topic that was covered. Essentially it is an insight into Oliver's life to which is the main focus of my project.

'When Lorna told me she was doing her project on me, I was both excited and worried, many an ambitious composition would be created and as well as this they would explore me on an intimate and personal level. I fount overall the project to be chilling in some places. Whilst in other times it was bright and a happy opportunity for Lorna and I to be creative. The first element was to explore my adventurous soul which always feels the urge to defy regiment. It was set on a field behind my house which is where I usually escape to.
I like to express my love of animals and my emotional attachments to them. I really do feel a relationship with beings that aren't human and that we are connected.
The book 'The Hobbit' is one of my favourite fictional works and I consider J.R.R Tolkein a hero of mine and of the elven world. Greek Mythology, I ma seen spouting from a book as a Greek Scholar.
I do not hate people because they are obese, but I can't seem to understand how someone allows their bodies to bloat into disproportion. The final photograph of this was very emotional.
Most people don't recognise that Seasonal Affective Disorder is an actual problem. When the sun is short I am miserable. This photograph reminds me of what I feel when I look at the calendar, weeks before the winter months.
There is definitely a part of my brain relative to creativity which is larger than the other part.
Every day I feel the same amount of energy and life within me even if I do not sleep at all. I cannot fall under Hypno's spell whence night falls. Nude art is the most exciting and intrusive form of art which holds no boundaries. It confuses me as to why people do not walk around naked all the time?'
